Do Not Think of an Elephant

Do not think of an elephant. This is an old proverb, that there is no way not to think of an elephant. The way we do not think about an elephant is to choose something else to think about and think about that. The mind can only entertain one thought at a time, and we can choose that thought. It does take some wrestling with our mind to achieve sovereignty over which thought will prevail. Our thought or "elephant." Our thought or our mind's. This is an exercise in concentration upon a single thought. Our thought.
